During the week of Aug. 31-Sept. 6, Hawaii Island police arrested 28 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Six of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.
During the week of Aug. 31-Sept. 6, Hawaii Island police arrested 28 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Six of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 12; South Hilo, 11; Puna, three; Ka‘u and South Kohala, one each.
So far this year, there have been 721 DUI arrests compared with 804 during the same period last year, a decrease of 10.3 percent.
There have been 1,027 major accidents so far this year compared to 1,095 during the same period last year, a decrease of 6.2 percent.
So far this year, there have been 15 official traffic fatalities compared to nine fatalities during the same period last year, an increase of 66.7 percent.
To date, nine of those fatalities have been linked to impaired driving — six to drugs and three to a combination of drugs and alcohol.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
